Steadfast by Sarina Bowen *Review*

Steadfast (True North Book 2)

by Sarina Bowen

Release Date: July 12, 2016

Blurb:

Jude lost everything one spring day when he crashed his car into an apple tree on the side of the road. A man is dead, and there’s no way he can ever right that wrong. He’d steer clear of Colebury, Vermont forever if he could. But an ex-con in recovery for his drug addiction can’t find a job just anywhere.

Sophie Haines is stunned by his reappearance. After a three year absence, the man who killed her brother and broke her heart is suddenly everywhere she turns. It’s hard not to stare at how much he’s changed. The bad boy who used to love her didn’t have big biceps and sun-kissed hair. And he’d never volunteer in the church kitchen.

No one wants to see Sophie and Jude back together, least of all Sophie’s police chief father. But it’s a small town. And forbidden love is a law unto itself.

Review:

Steadfast is the second book in the True North series by Sarina Bowen.

If you haven’t read book one, Bittersweet, you totally should. 😉

However, if you haven’t (yet) read book one, you will still be able to completely love book two on it’s own.👍

Steadfast is Jude’s story. Jude was a farm hand sent to help Grumpy Griff in book one after his release from prison/rehab and was struggling with his new lease on life. The subject matter of this book is a bit more serious than it was in book one.

The struggles of addiction are hard to portray honestly with out losing the fantasy of the story in the process. In my opinion, however, Sarina Bowen managed to both tell this story honestly and still give us a beautifully romantic story.

I normally use gifs to illustrate my point with my reviews to add a bit of humor. But as the message of this book is so serious, I’m opting to not use them just this one time.

Jude and Sophie have such a tragic past (and present) to overcome there are several points in this book that I found myself feeling frustration at both of their situations. They both deserve so much more in life than they’ve been given and neither one can see that they are the only ones truly standing in their own way.

There is one scene where they discuss the awful feeling someone with a felony in their past has about filling out an employment application. The question this author poses about our society and how we treat anyone with a documented past is both fascinating and heartbreaking.

I give Steadfast 5 out of 5 Krissy Stars.

This book will resonate with anyone who has dealt with addiction (theirs or someone else’s) and sends a powerful message of forgiveness.

*I was generously given an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
