The Playboy Bachelor AND Fraternize by Rachel Van Dyken *REVIEWS*

Sometimes when I’m deep into a “reading funk” I like to peruse Netgalley and see if anything they have piques my interest. I’ve read a couple of Rachel Van Dykens previous titles (The Bachelor Auction and Cheater) so when there were two of hers up for grabs, I decided to get them both and hope for the best.

Although I did review these books separately, I decided to make one post because… well…

To me, these two books read extremely similar in plot. (PLEASE don’t attack me!!! I love RVD!)

Although the characters in each book are very different, the same key plot points read eerily similar to me. They’re both slow burn romances about love lost now found, both include unrequited love, and both have the best-friends-to-lovers theme.

I asked around and since I’m the ONLY one of my book friends who felt this way, I’m guessing I only felt this way because I read these two books back to back. So here are my reviews for The Playboy Bachelor and Fraternize by Rachel Van Dyken!

Enjoy!

synopsis

She’s no Sleeping Beauty. And he’s definitely no prince . . .

Margot McCleery could have lived her whole life without seeing Bentley Wellington again-her ex-best friend and the poster boy for Hot, Rich Man-Whores everywhere. But Margot’s whiskey-augmented grandmother “buys” Bentley at a charity bachelor auction, and now suddenly he’s at her door. Impossibly charming. Impossibly sexy. And still a complete and utter jackass.

Bentley’s just been coerced by his grandfather to spend the next thirty days charming and romancing the reclusive red-haired beauty who hates him. The woman he abandoned when she needed him the most. Bentley knows just as much about romance as he knows about love-nothing. But the more time he spends with Margot, the more he realizes that “just friends” will never be enough. Now all he has to do is convince her to trust him with her heart . . .

Review2

I was expecting this book to be just as hilarious as the previous book, the Bachelor Auction. It wasn’t. Although it was much less funny to me, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Sometimes when you read books in a series they start to read like cookie cutter versions of the first book and can begin to lose my interest. (Though I’ll read the rest of the series anyway because I ain’t no quitter! Haha!)

When sequels have their own unique feel and still fit into the main series they tend to stand out to me and I’m more able to remember each book in the series more easily.

The Bachelor Auction, as stated above, is a slow burn romance with a friends-to-lovers plot with a twist. 😉

The heroine, Margot, was a bit curmudgeon and that was fun to read. She played well off of her long lost friend, Bentley, and their banter was my favorite part of this read.

Even though this book wasn’t nearly as side-splitting hilarious as it’s predecessor, I enjoyed this story and feel like it’s a great addition to the Bachelors of Arizona series.

I give The Playboy Bachelor 4 out of 5 Krissy Stars!

Fraternize (Players Game Book 1) by [Van Dyken, Rachel]

Fraternize

by Rachel Van Dyken

synopsis

New York Times bestselling author Rachel Van Dyken kicks off a brand-new series in which romance is a game and love is a touchdown.

Emerson just made her dream come true as a professional cheerleader for her favorite pro football team. But even though the plus-size athlete is breaking down boundaries, she still has to contend with the massive rulebook. Carbs? Nope. Chocolate? Definitely not. Still, Emerson loves her curves, and she’ll rock the hell out of this job even if it kills her. Except for one mandate that is easier read than done…

No fraternizing with the players.

Problem one is Miller Quinton: Emerson’s first love, first sex, and the guy who still ignites her daydreams and R-rated fantasies. Thrown back together, Miller and Emerson feel the undeniable pull of passion again, even if the conflict that tore them apart seems insurmountable. Then there’s way-too-sexy Grant Sanchez. He has a serious reputation with the ladies, and when it comes to winning someone he wants, he doesn’t let anyone stand in his way.

Now Emerson is breaking every rule in the manual. But what she doesn’t know is that she’s part of a wicked little game—one that could steal both her dream and her heart.

Review2

Fraternize caught my attention with the blurb promising a plus-size heroine in a sporty romance. Both of those genre’s are right up my alley and although I had already requested one RVD title from Netgalley, I couldn’t stop myself from requesting just one more. 😉

Just like the Playboy Bachelor, this book is a delicious slow burn with a friends-to-lovers plot. Both books have a backstory where the “friends” haven’t seen each other in years due to some event that left them hating each other and never got to express their true feelings for one another.

The added element of a plus size heroine in this book though, seems to take center stage in the story. I went back and forth (being plus sized myself) on how I felt about it playing such a major role in this story, but I ended up appreciating how the author handled this character detail in the end.

There’s another added element of a super juicy love triangle. Most of the time love triangles make me anxious to read. This one was really good though. There isn’t a cheating element that usually makes my anxiety soar so this triangle was just entertaining and romantic for me to read.

I loved the ending of this book. I spent one half of the book rooting for one hero and the other half rooting for the other. By the end of the story, my heart, much like the heroine’s, was torn in two and I didn’t know which way it would go.

I give Fraternize 4 out of 5 Krissy’s Stars.

If you’re in to sports romance like me I think you’re really going to like this read.
